Simi Valley Tidbits

.
Simi Valley is a city in Ventura County that is considered a suburb of the Greater Los Angeles Area and San Fernando Valley. It is just a short drive away from California’s most famous attractions like Malibu, Los Angeles, and Hollywood.

Before Simi Valley became a popular destination, two Chumash tribes settled in the area. Their villages were called Shimiji and Ta’apu. It is believed that Simi Valley was named after the village Shimiji while the city’s Tapo Street got its name from the Ta’apu village. The city’s official tree is the Coast Live Oak and official flower is the California Wild Rose. Both of which were influenced by the Chumash Native Americans.

In 1795, a land grant was given to Francisco Javier Pico and his family by Spanish Governor Diego de Borica. The Rancho Simi was approximately 113,000 acres in size and it was one of the largest land grants ever given. According to the land grant’s official document, the name’s emphasis is on the second syllable. Thus, the correct pronunciation of Simí should be “suh-MEE” instead of “SEE-me.”

For a while, the postal address was known as Simiopolis, but it was changed back to Simi by 1910. The first public school was constructed 1890 in the northeast part of the city. Simi Valley was officially incorporated as a city in 1969 with only 10,000 residents. Now, its population continues to grow and has over 126,000 residents since 2008.

Today, you can get to Simi Valley through different ways. You can even enter through the port facilities that are situated in Port Hueneme, which is only 34 miles away. If you plan to go on a road trip, Highway 118 runs through Simi Valley and is connected to Highways 23 and 101. If you travel by plane, there are three airports near the city. The Los Angeles International Airport is roughly 42 miles away while the Burbank Airport and the Camarillo Airport are both 25 miles away. The city also has taxi services and a local bus system.

According to the Ventura County’s 2010 Statistical Data, the city has 34 parks, 2 swimming pools, 4 golf courses, 2 theaters and a performing arts center. Simi Valley’s public education has one unified school district, 21 primary schools, 3 secondary schools, 3 middle schools, 1 independent study school, and 1 library.

As for housing availability and rentals, there are 7 mobile home parks in the city and over 77% of the houses are owner-occupied abodes. Condominiums are from $180,000 to $550,000 while detached homes are from $275,000 to more than a million. The U.S. Census Bureau 2009 report states that the median housing value was $326,000 and the median household income was $87,502.

The city also experiences cold climate cools during winter with an average temperature of 35.5 degrees Fahrenheit. The elevation ranges from 700 feet to 1,000 feet and because of this low elevation, Simi Valley usually encounters rainy winters. However, snow is rare in Simi Valley even in the highest regions. The annual average precipitation is 18.3 inches and February is the wettest month of the year. Winter months experience an average rainfall of 4.6 inches while the entire city gets an average of 14.37 inches of rain annually.

Since its incorporation in 1969, the city follows a council-manager type of government.

One of Simi Valley’s notable attraction is the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum. Designed by Hugh Stubbins and Associates, the 3.5-acre library is the largest out of all the 13 presidential libraries. The library is only 40 miles away from Downtown Los Angeles.

During 2007, the Reagan Library had 305,331 visitors, earning the distinction of being the second most visited presidential library after Lyndon B. Johnson Library. Since it opened in November 1991, the library has over 50 million pages of presidential documents, more than a million photographs, and thousands of audiovisual recordings. Reagan’s personal papers and other collections when he was the Governor of California were also stored in the library.

Simi Valley’s Cultural Arts Center is one of Ventura County’s Historical Landmarks. The Neo-Classis building has been preserved to show its former life. In fact, some of the old furnishings are now used as a seating for patrons prior to a theatrical show.

Of course, there’s still more places to visit in Simi Valley. You can head to popular attractions like the Bottle Village, Iceoplex Ice Arena, Santa Susana Railroad Depot & Museum, Strathearn Historical Park & Museum, and many more. From its family friendly amusement parks to famous museums, Simi Valley definitely has something for everyone.
